Progress BJJ NoGi Rashguard Review

HUMAN PROGRESS IS NEITHER AUTOMATIC NOR INEVITABLE… EVERY STEP TOWARD THE GOAL OF JUSTICE REQUIRES SACRIFICE, SUFFERING, AND STRUGGLE. – Martin Luther King Jr.

The M6 Progress Rashguard – Simply Sharp

I am very excited to present you guys with my current favorite rashguard in my nogi collection.  It speaks to my growing interest in minimalism, and it is of very good quality.  I haven’t come across many other rashguards that focus on minimal design and great quality.  Usually, it’s going to be a very elaborate design with great quality, or a simple rashguard that isn’t meant for bjj.  Elaborate rashguards are cool, don’t get me wrong.  I like those too.  But sometimes, the loudest statement you can make is the one that you imply.  A new brand seems to have made some… progress in bjj gear design that is both practical and no-nonsense.

PeelGi: The Demon Gate – Rash Guard & Fight Shorts Review

Demon Gate Rashguard

PeelGi’s Demon Gate Rashguard & Fight Shorts Review

When I received the opportunity to review the Demon Gate rash guard & shorts, I was pretty super stoked, bro.  PeelGi is a new company comprised of two French dudes who value aesthetic design.  Moreover, they like to be innovative in regards to how to use design and where to use it.  This is the first group I have seen really start to venture into other parts of bjj gear design.  For example, they have some very unique belt designs for you to swag yourself out on.  I like seeing creatives take risks with products.  It appears that the belts have been very popular as they have sold out each time.  I’d like one myself.

FROM THEIR ABOUT PAGE:

Peel Gi is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/Grappling/MMA & Lifestyle brand from Paris.
It was created in 2013 by Alexis Hadefi and Julien Rahami.
Both fighters, kinda picky and unhappy about what we have to wear for our martial art, we decided to create our own brand.

“I WILL FIGHT THEM ON MY FEET AND ON THE GROUND AND THEIR ATTACKS WILL ACHIEVE NOTHING BUT FAILURE”

THE ANATOMY OF THE DEMON GATE CONCEPT:

The demon gate concept is derived from the series “oni-ni-kanabo” which means “oni with an iron club” a japanese metaphor.  The oni is, more or less, a demon that is depicted in traditional Japanese folklore.  The metaphor of an oni with an iron club refers to a being that is strong beyond strong.  At the risk of butchering the folklore, I will not risk offending my Japanese mat brethren by trying to explain the story.  But, if you are curious, wikipedia has some information.  The PeelGi Demon Gate NoGi ensemble is an expression of this fable under the lens of the modern grappler.

Wartape Promotional Giveaway Social Media Contest

Keep Your Hands Healthy!

This contest is over. If you would like to participate in future contests, join the email newsletter.

Wartape Social Media Contest Giveaway

Hey guys, let’s make this concise.  Because, as beautiful as my words are, you are here for one thing and one thing only: to get your hands on some great athletic tape for your bjj fingers.  I have teamed up with Wartape to create a social media contest to create some buzz in the bjj community for one of their products before the launch of their new beautiful website.  Specifically speaking, we want to create some buzz about their half inch tape product.

The tape is GREAT for your fingers.  My instructor uses it every day twice a day and he says it’s the only thing keeping his hands healthy.  Lots of years of spider guard can wreck havoc  on those finger joints!

However, rather than selling you on why this product is great.  We want to get the tape in and around your fingers so you can be the judge.

We will be giving away twenty-four rolls to twelve lucky winners.  You may enter more than once, AND you can enter on more than one social network (if you’d like).

You can enter via Facebook, Instagram, and/or Twitter.

Check out the details below and make sure to read the entire post…

The Most Blatant Examples of Datsusara’s Gear Bag Design Being Stolen

By Ruben Avila  · November 4, 2013  · @RubenEAvila

The gear bag that started it all, and CHANGED it all.

There are few companies that I deem worthy to follow.  Most companies are all about the bottom line with no regard for their patrons.  Datsusara is not one of these soulless companies.  Datsusara is not another faceless company whose main prerogative is to get you to split with your hard earned money for their own benefit.  I am a big fan of the company and the way the owner does business.  In fact, I, personally, own their flagship product (pictured above) the Pro Gear Bag as it meets all of my training needs and then some.

But, this post isn’t about the greatness of this company.  Nor about how Chris (the owner) has figured out a way to make business an ethical and pleasurable experience for his customers.

No, sir.

This post is about other companies blatantly ripping off Datsusara designs/ideas, and why it matters to you (or why it should).

Techniques to Defeat Bigger and Stronger Opponents

By Ruben Avila  · October 3, 2013  · @RubenEAvila

bjj techniques to defeat bigger and stronger opponents
“I always try to attack. While I’m on the offensive, my opponent can think of nothing but defending.” – Marcelo Garcia

A book to point out the keys to beat bigger guys, plain & simple.

This doesn’t happen often for me, but when I finished this book, it was as if Dan came to talk to me after getting smashed  by someone bigger than me.  I could all but picture him sitting down next to me, while I have my head down trying to figure out why I could not express my techniques well, putting his hand on my shoulder and giving me the 411.

This book does more than just suggest certain techniques to use, it gives you, as a small grappler, a set of principles and concepts to add to your overall Jiu-Jitsu philosophy in regards to fighting.

bjj techniques to defeat bigger and stronger opponents
“A small target submission is any submission that involves using a lot of you against a little part of them.” – Dan Faggela

Sometimes, especially for me now that I am at purple belt, you don’t need to learn new techniques.  Sometimes, it’s about organizing your game plan to use techniques you already know in a strategic manner to help you excel.  I am a huge fan of systemized approaches because it just works well with my OCD tendencies.  I also need to see the big picture before I can truly buy in.

I read the book and I pondered it for some time.  I looked for some evidence that these tactics work via YouTube.  It made a lot of sense, and, empirically speaking, it worked.  But, would it work for me?

I have read this book twice now, and I can tell you that the big picture presented in this book has helped me a lot already.

There’s no way I could write about this book, without trying it out on the mats.  I owe myself that, and frankly, I owe it to you, too.  So, after a week of training and trying these principles out, I can flat out say that it just works.  The ideas and concepts in this book helped me level the playing bar against my bigger teammates and gave me an edge and extra dimension.

How to Wash Your Black BJJ Gis to Keep Them Dark & Sexy

By Ruben Avila  · August 16, 2013  · @RubenEAvila

Wash BJJ Gis That Are Black Without Turning Them Gray:

Last week, I showed you guys how I prefer to wash my white jiu-jitsu gis when they are extra funky or getting dingy. In all honesty, I try to use at least some of those methods even if I don’t have the time to soak my gis, because the lawd knows how the bjj gear can stink to high heaven after years of sweat hard work.

Great!  We have a good starting point for washing our bjj gis.  But, what about our black bjj gis or other dark bjj gis (I know tatami has come out with an array of colors for bjj gis)?  Well, as I told you guys, I suffer from a lot of obsessive compulsive behaviors, so I can’t have my black gis turning gray on me.  No sir!  That will just not do.

What to Use to Wash Your Black BJJ Gis:
