The Jiu-Jitsu Weekend Roundup

By Ruben Avila  · September 2, 2013  · @RubenEAvila

Hello Fellow Jits peeps.  This week was a little slow on the written content, and while there was a lot of random techniques posted.  As far as this week goes, this is what I believe you shouldn’t miss.  So, take a moment this Labor Day to get your daily dose of Jiu-Jitsu.  I suggest you drink some tea or coffee (iced if necessary) for maximum enjoyment.

For the previous weeks round ups, check out the links below (the first roundup explains the entire premise for these posts).

Post Training Meal for BJJ: Chicken with Brown Rice Pasta

By Ruben Avila  · August 26, 2013  · @RubenEAvila

This is a Great Post Training Meal for BJJ

Not sure if this is useful or interesting to everyone, but this is how I generally cook for myself.  I’m a single guy who lives alone.  Cooking for myself every day is… depressing.  But, eating out constantly is not affordable advisable either.  So, I cook in bulk instead.  This recipe here is what I’d consider to be a good post training meal after bjj training or post weight resistance training (do you even lift, bro?).

If you are new to this blog, here is an explanation of what this post is meant to be.  This week there was much more video content than the last.  Either way, it’s still grappling so we all win.  Enjoy the best of jiu-jitsu online this week.

How to Wash Your Black BJJ Gis to Keep Them Dark & Sexy

By Ruben Avila  · August 16, 2013  · @RubenEAvila

Wash BJJ Gis That Are Black Without Turning Them Gray:

Last week, I showed you guys how I prefer to wash my white jiu-jitsu gis when they are extra funky or getting dingy. In all honesty, I try to use at least some of those methods even if I don’t have the time to soak my gis, because the lawd knows how the bjj gear can stink to high heaven after years of sweat hard work.

Great!  We have a good starting point for washing our bjj gis.  But, what about our black bjj gis or other dark bjj gis (I know tatami has come out with an array of colors for bjj gis)?  Well, as I told you guys, I suffer from a lot of obsessive compulsive behaviors, so I can’t have my black gis turning gray on me.  No sir!  That will just not do.

The Jiu-Jitsu Weekend Roundup

By Ruben Avila  · August 11, 2013  · @RubenEAvila

I hate looking at my jiu-jitsu news feeds and seeing the exaaaaaaaaact saaaaaaaaame connnnnnntent shared by the people I follow/like/etc.  I ask myself, “Are they really that oblivious that their readers/fans/followers/etc., more than likely, also follow the person whose content they are sharing?”

As a result, I have the honor of being spammed blessed with the same technique from Caio Terra from 5-10 different fan pages/twitter users/etc.  Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Caio Terra jiu-jitsu techniques.  The point is that Caio has a pretty extensive following, and if I want to see his techniques, I’ll get them straight from his own fan page/twitter/etc.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

I have had it up to here with the over sharing.  People, it’s honestly okay to not have something new to “share” every hour of the day.  Do you remember what #outside looks like?  For the love of Helio, GIVE THE SHARING A BREAK!

K, I’m done with my /r/rant.  I will say, though, if you have a decent sized following you should try to share content of value from people who have smaller voices.  Share techniques from people who aren’t being listened to, share incredible matches from, dare I say, non-world-champions, share insights and perspectives that otherwise wouldn’t be come across just browsing the web.  Help out the #littleguys, isn’t that more aligned with the spirit of #jiujitsu anyway?

Had enough of the social media #wordplay?  As have I.  I will now step off my soap box and practice what I preach.  I postulate that if I provide good resources of value in an easily consumable way, good things will happen for us all.  Check out these posts I found useful/entertaining from the past week:

How to Keep Your White Gis White & Smelling Good: Washing Jiu-Jitsu Gis

By Ruben Avila  · July 30, 2013  · @RubenEAvila

Wash Jiu-Jitsu Gi
Hanging Your Gi in a Way That Faces Sun Light Will Keep it Crispy like this 5 year old Gi top!

How to Whiten Gis & Laundry Without Chlorine Bleach

Some people choose to not use chlorine bleach when washing their clothes as it can irritate your eyes, skin, and lungs.  Some greener folk worry about poisoning fish and insects as well as the release of carcinogenic dioxins during production (what?).

I used bleach when washing my Jiu-Jitsu Gi when I was a white belt, and while I had the sexiest Gi at the Academy, it didn’t last a year before someone ripped it when fighting for grips (or some such).

Do not use bleach when you wash your jiu-jitsu gi.

Using bleach when washing your jiu-jitsu gi will cause the fibers of the fabric to weaken, deteriorate, and, over time, tear.  Jiu-Jitsu Gis can be expensive.  So, I had to find an alternate way of keeping my Jiu-Jitsu Gis from becoming gray, dingy, and gross since it would drive me nuts (OCD, animal style please).  This goes double for when I have to train while recovering from an illness.

If you happen to be part of the OCD community, fret not!  I have found numerous ways to keep your Gis white without using bleach AND they work on your regular white clothes too.  Just in case you ever start to worry about the fish.  If your white gi is stained and you need help, you have stumbled on the right jiu-jitsu blog, my friend.

So, without further adieu, this is what I do when I need to get my white gis as white and fresh as possible.
