Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Purple Belt: The True Meaning

By Ruben Avila  · June 11, 2013  · @RubenEAvila

bjj purple belt

I was having lunch with my instructor after watching some 7 odd hours of Mundials action when the subject of promotions came up.  You see, at our academy, we hold promotions twice a year.  We hold one following the worlds and then another in December.  We started talking about who was going to be promoted and the like when he implied that I was going to get promoted to a BJJ purple belt as well.

Befuddled, I anxiously asked, “Wait, you mean I am getting promoted too?”  He matter of factly said, “Yes.”  As if it was a forgone conclusion.

My mind raced, and every roll I had ever partaken in flashed before my eyes (I’m kidding); I began to tune out of the conversation.  I came back.  “Do I have to be promoted?”  I asked, still befuddled but now much more anxious than anything else.  “It’s time.  You’ve put in a lot of work.  You’re ready.  I can’t hold you back.”  Each of those statements said in a cold fuck-your-couch calculating manner.  (I could have picked a timelier phrase there and, perhaps, saved you all that confusion. But … no.  I miss Dave Chapelle.)

IBJJF Adult Brown Belt Rankings Gi & NoGi

By Ruben Avila  · June 5, 2013  · @RubenEAvila

IBJJF Brown Belt Rankings
Whether you enjoy their matches or not, no one can deny their skill. With the upset over Keenan Cornelius, Paulo Miyao became the first light featherweight to win the brown belt absolute title in a LONG time.

Some say the skill level between a brown belt and black belt is indiscernible in jiu-jitsu.  I would agree that in some cases, perhaps, that may be true.  But, I have to point out that for the most part there is a huge disparity in skill between the elite competitive brown belts and the elite competitive black belts.  Some brown belts, have closed that gap seemingly over night.

And so, I have decided to add another post to keep us all updated on the top brown belts to watch out for based on ibjjf rankings.

Metamoris 2 Announced Fight Card Matches That Promise to Deliver Non-Stop Action – BJJGrappling.com

By Ruben Avila  · April 16, 2013  · @RubenEAvila

metamoris 2
Exciting BJJ Fight Card for Metamoris 2!

Metamoris 2 fight card finally announced and made public!

After the first Metamoris card, I knew this is something that I will be watching on a regular basis every time it comes out.  I may be more pumped to watch this than UFC pay per views now (and, trust me, I get VERY pumped up for UFC fights).

The last Metamoris jiu-jitsu event was done very well.  I think their team did a very good job of listening to the fans when putting Metamoris 2 together.  We have a jiu-jitsu fight card here full of fighters that always go for the jugular.  In case you live under a rock, or mountain for that matter, and you missed the first metamoris (shame on you) here is a nice highlight video of the action in the first metamoris: Read the rest

IBJJF Pan Ams 2013 Results & Highlights – BJJGrappling.com

By Ruben Avila  · March 25, 2013  · @RubenEAvila

A great shot of Rafael Mendes finishing an armbar by amazing bjj photographer Mike Calimbas.  Check out his website for more great action shots.

The IBJJF Pan Ams 2013 Results surprised me a bit, but for the most part I wasn’t too far off on my predictions.

In the rooster division I said Bruno Malfacine and Caio Terra would meet up in the finals, and they sure as hell did.  They both had an impressive run at the 2013 Pan Ams and Bruno served up two nasty arm bars that I personally saw.  One of them on Takahito Yoshioka came so fast, that Yoshioka didn’t have enough time to tap before getting hurt.  Felipe Costa made it to the semi finals against Bruno Malfacine, but Bruno was just better that day.  In the finals, Caio Terra won the 2013 Pan Ams with a very well thought out attack.  On a side note: did anyone catch the toe hold Bruno Malfacine had on Caio?  Is Caio an invertebrate?  Geez!
